One of the primary difficulties is the tundra and permafrost terrain. Which can be soft, unstable, and highly sensitive to disturbance. Equipment mobility is limited. Special care must be taken to prevent environmental impact. Such as rutting or vegetation damage. In many cases, drilling crews must use lightweight, low-ground-pressure rigs. Or work from frozen ground during winter to minimize surface disruption.
Access is another major challenge. Many sites are located in remote or roadless areas. Requiring helicopter transport, ice roads, or barge delivery of drilling equipment and supplies. Logistics must be planned months in advance. Crews must be fully self-sufficient, with provisions for power, shelter, and safety.
Weather also plays a major role in operational complexity. Extreme cold, high winds, and limited daylight hours can shorten the working season. This can affect equipment reliability.
In addition, groundwater and soil conditions in northern environments are often variable. With frozen layers, saturated zones, and thick organic mats. Complicating sample recovery and well installation.
